A watching brief on topsoil stripping during construction of the golf course was carried out by Rob Poulton of SCAU for BMP Building Ltd. No archaeological features and only a few pieces of worked flint of Mesolithic or Neolithic date were observed.

Field walking in advance of gravel extraction, by Graham Hayman of SCAU for Greenham Construction Materials Ltd and Tarmac Roadstone Ltd, revealed concentrations of struck flint of Neolithic or Bronze Age date. A wide variety of tools was represented, including scrapers, awls, burins and arrowheads, and the presence of cores and hammerstones, as well as a large number of waste flakes, indicated that flint working was taking place in the vicinity.

Fieldwalking of an area proposed for mineral extraction carried out by Graham Hayman of SCAU for Hall Aggregates (Thames Valley) Ltd produced 34 pieces of struck flint, randomly distributed over the site. No diagnostic pieces were recovered, but most of the pieces are probably Neolithic or Bronze Age in date.

Fieldwalking by D Montgomery recovered 235 pieces of struck flint across an area of 6 ha. A concentration was noted at TQ 063 474. The flint included 72 unused secondary flakes, 3 flake cores, 23 blades or blade parts, 10 microlith blades, 1 scraper and part of a Neolithic polished axe reused as a scraper. (275)

Evaluation and subsequent formal excavation in advance of the Runfold diversion, part of the Blackwater Valley Route, by Graham Hayman of SCAU for SCC, recorded a range of features including ditches, postholes, pits and a small four-post structure. Provisional examination of the pottery suggests that features of Neolithic, Bronze Age, Iron Age, Roman and medieval date were present. A few sherds of Saxon pottery were also discovered. (273)

Observation of trenches dug to prevent occupation of the site and of foundation work by S P Dyer for SCAU and Homebase Ltd produced five struck flints of Mesolithic or early Neolithic type; no features were located but the flints are thought to indicate a nearby site (279)

A watching brief by J Robertson of SCAU for Brabant Petroleum Ltd, during the construction a borehole site, recovered one Neolithic single-platform blade core and four waste flakes.

Evaluation by G Hayman of SCAU for Greenham Construction Materials and Tarmac Roadstone Ltd, of phase 4 of mineral extraction at this site, followed on from evaluation and excavation of the earlier phases in previous years. Two areas of archaeological interest, both occupying slightly elevated positions, were noted and subsequently excavated. A variety of features, mainly Middle or Late Bronze Age but including some Late Neolithic or Early Bronze Age, were recorded. Finds included fragments of perforated clay slabs, which are typically Late Bronze Age.

Excavation by D W Williams for SyAS in advance of mineral extraction revealed two concentrations of activity. One was a concentration of pits, three of which contained Late Neolithic grooved ware and, palaeo-environmental assessment revealed, hazelnut shells; one of these pits also contained over 30 flint scrapers. Other pits were packed with charcoal and cremated bone, and one contained a Bronze Age spiral ring. The surrounding areas produced a variety of flints from Late Mesolithic through to Middle Bronze Age date, and sherds of decorated Peterborough type bowls from the Neolithic.

Evaluation by B Langton of the Cotswold Archaeological Trust for Wates Built Homes Ltd recorded a scatter of mainly Neolithic flints and a number of features of Bronze Age date on this former racecourse adjacent to the Thames. More detailed excavation of the site was subsequently undertaken by P Andrews for Wessex Archaeology, which identified multi-period activity on an area of higher land.
