5 and 6 Millmead, Guildford

Excavation (1975-6) by Barbara Blatchford and Audrey Monk for the Guildford Group of SyAS produced two features with flint, chalk and tile fragments and associated 13th/14th century pottery, a burnt area with associated late 12th/ 13th century pottery, and several later features. (132)

Guildford Park Manor

Excavation by Dr A.G. Crocker for the University of Surrey Archaeological Society and Department of Adult Education (fourth season, 1975). Various features of 13th to 17th century date were located at the north end of the moated island, and part of the manor house was also found. (129; summary report in SyAC 97)

Abinger Forge

A G Crocker reports that a layer of black soil, cinder and slag, a robber trench and several large waterlogged timbers have been revealed by developers erecting a new building on the site of the forge. Samples of timber have been taken for dendrochronology by the Ancient Monuments Laboratory. (SIHG 3)

Long Ditton

Surviving traces of a ditched boundary between Long Ditton and Thames Ditton parishes may be pre-Saxon in origin if they are part of the 'long ditch' from which Long Ditton gets its name. Noted by D Field. (see Bulletin 165)

Frillinghurst

Recording by L Draper of a previously unknown iron-working furnace site relating to the West End bay, revealed in roadworks. A clay area about 3m long and 1m high was seen in section, containing highly burnt 5cm thick bricks and flanked by rough sandstone blocks still in situ. (183 and SIHG 15)

Farnham Park

Excavation by K D Graham and Anna Mercer for the Farnham Museum Society and Waverley District Council of a probably 17th century tile kiln producing a variety of tiles. (actually medieval)

Henley Wood

Pottery from the medieval earthwork has now been deposited at the East Surrey Museum. Lesley Ketteringham reports that study of some of the pottery by Southampton University shows it to be earlier than the known building within the enclosure (c 1150-1350); a 6th/7th century date is suggested.
