Evaluation by A Taylor of TVAS revealed two post-medieval gullies and a posthole, probably relating to the former use of the site as a walled garden. A small assemblage of post-medieval pottery was recovered, together with a single sherd dating to the 11th–12th centuries.

Watching brief by D Graham of SyAS during refurbishment works. The site falls immediately inside the projected course of the medieval town ditch, with groundworks proposed in the area that may once have been the location for the postulated associated internal bank. No finds or features of archaeological interest were revealed

Evaluation by B Whitehead of SoAS revealed only modern features, although a single unstratified broken flint blade was recovered.

Watching brief by R Lambert of SCAU, following evaluation in 2006. No features of archaeological significance were recorded, but a number of worked flints of probable Bronze Age date, together with pottery and clay pipe stems of late 17th–early 18th century origin, were recovered.

Large-scale evaluation programme by A Manning of WA. Varied results were recorded, ranging from largely negative areas where no finds or features of archaeological interest were revealed, through to evidence for Neolithic activity, Bronze Age and Iron Age settlement, and post-medieval agricultural land management. Subsequent excavation revealed a significant number of pits, postholes and gullies of Late Bronze Age–Early Iron Age date.

Recording action by S Townend of AOC during development. Deposits possibly associated with the 19th century construction and current use of the windmill were observed, although the investigation was too limited to provide conclusive evidence

Landscape survey by Philip Masters of ACTA as part of the SCC and SyAS ASHLV study programme. In total, 150 features were recorded across the common. Predominantly, these were a series of boundary earthworks, hollow-ways and tracks. Many of these probably date from the use of the common during the Second World War by the Canadian Army, although the vast majority are probably medieval or post-medieval, and many can be identified on historic maps.

Evaluation by S Coles of TVAS revealed two intercutting pits, the earlier being undated, but the stratigraphically higher being clearly medieval or later.

Watching brief by C Currie of CKCA during the breaching of the dams and draining of Rowe’s Flash and Phillimore Lakes. The remains of a suspected medieval timber revetment were revealed at Phillimore Lake, although the timbers proved unsuitable for dendrochronological analyses. The feature is probably related to the former millpond, which was enlarged in the 19th century to create the lake. Rowe’s Flash Lake was also created at this time, with the 19th century dams of both features revealed to be of relatively poor standards of construction.
