18th century

Town Hall, Reigate

Excavation and watching brief by J Robertson of SCAU, for Reigate and Banstead Borough Council, revealed the bailey ditch of Reigate Castle, and related 13th century features. The ditch had been cleaned out in the 18th century and used as a moated feature within the landscaped grounds of the former castle, and filled in during the late 18th or 19th century, possibly when the adjacent Tunnel Road was constructed in 1821.

137-143 High Street, Guildford

Excavation, watching brief, and historic building recording programme, by Charlotte Matthews of Wessex, on behalf of Scottish Widows Fund and Life Assurance Company, prior to redevelopment. Features dating from the 12th to 18th/19th centuries were revealed, although nothing from the late medieval to early post medieval was found. Virtually no structural remains survived; it is likely that prior to the 18th century the area investigated lay in yard areas to the rear of the street frontage buildings.

127-131 High Street, Guildford

A watching brief was maintained by M Dover of SCAU, for Guardian Properties Ltd, on the excavation of a number of foundation bases. Differences in the levels of the natural chalk encountered were interpreted as possible quarrying activity or intercutting pitting, with a probable 17th or 18th century infilling episode above. No earlier features were recorded.

Dippenhall House, Farnham

Watching brief and photographic survey by N Shaikhley of SCAU prior to and during demolition works. No archaeological features of any antiquity were noted, although numerous remains relating to the former 18th and 19th century structures on the site were observed.

Waterloo House, High Street, Epsom

Watching brief by K Sabel of PCA on geotechnical trial pits. Evidence for the 17th-18th century origins of the building were revealed, including earlier foundations, drainage and timber flooring. Remains pre-dating Waterloo House were also revealed, in the form of surviving post-medieval layers and residual medieval building material. Considerable evidence of Saxon/Early Medieval occupation was recovered also.

Great Fosters Hotel, Egham

Excavation and watching brief by J Leary of PCA during large-scale redevelopment. Demolition of the kitchens revealed the remains of former 18th century outbuildings, with possible Tudor antecedents, above a medieval ploughsoil. Possible prehistoric features were also observed in drainage works nearby.

30--38 Church Street, Staines

Watching brief by P Jones of SCAU following an evaluation last year revealed that the site appears to have been on the shoreline of a river channel that would once have lain largely below Bridge Street and possibly the neighbouring Montpelier House. Finds indicate that the site was probably not reclaimed until the 17th or 18th centuries, and the only archaeological features revealed were the truncated remains of some of the walls of the (probably late 18th or early 19th century) Lancasterian School that once stood on the site, and four cess and/or well pits.
