Excavation to the rear of No 43 by D W Williams for HAG located a well-preserved brick and stone built kiln, demolished c 1700, the lowest courses of a sub-circular stone well, backfilled in the 16th century, and part of a stone structure of the 13th or 14th century. The kiln was probably used for malting, and has been preserved beneath an access road to the new development. Observation and salvage on other parts of the site revealed near the main excavation a line of probably 14th century pottery water pipes, some 25 complete or nearly so and a lead sheet at one end of the line.

Excavation by E A Crossland for LDLHS around the well revealed no dating evidence, but it is probably 17th century like the cottage.

Site watching by S Nelson for NAS and Bourne Hall Museum recovered 17th to 19th century pottery groups; one in a cesspit made of reused Merton Priory stone included some 200 clay pipes

Landscape survey and historic assessment by P Stevens of SHAHT. A number of landscape features were catalogued, including evidence for the former moated site. A resistivity survey by G James of SHAHT, conducted to identify the remains of the earlier medieval and Tudor manor houses, provided inconclusive results.

Watching brief by P Harp of Plateau during the excavations for a gas main. No finds or features of archaeological significance were revealed.

Watching brief by P Harp of Plateau during the installation of a new water main recovered a small number of Mesolithic or Neolithic flints. Part of the route passed close to Dene Farm (now the Rambler’s Rest public house), where a significant quantity of 13th century pottery was revealed during reinstatement works. Place-name evidence records habitation at Dene Farm as far back as 1301

Watching brief by N Cowlard of EEHAS did not reveal any finds or features of archaeological interest.

Third and fourth seasons of excavation led by H Sheldon of BC and J Cotton of EEHAS, on an area of higher ground overlooking the Roman settlement of Ewell and Stane Street and where traces of Roman activity were located in the 1970s. The aim of both seasons of work was to build on investigation of areas examined during previous seasons, and define more clearly the areas dug in the 1970s; both revealed further prehistoric, Roman, and later deposits.
