SIHG Talk "The Panama Canal" by John How (Leatherhead)

Date:
Thursday, 20 March, 2025 - 14:00 to 16:00

Retired engineer and volunteer for the Inland Waterways Association (IWA) and the Basingstoke Canal Society will give us an illustrated talk on the history of the Panama Canal.

As a history group, we’re all interested in times past and don’t usually attempt to do talks on topical subjects. But this one, quite accidentally, has become rather topical: the Panama Canal has been in the news lately, due to Donald Trump’s social media postings on “Truth”, in which he’s threatened to invade Panama and “take the canal back”.
Some commentators have had the temerity to question the President-elect’s knowledge of the history of the Panama Canal, so maybe we should send an invitation to “The Donald” to come along to John’s talk and educate himself? Even if he can’t make it, why not come along yourself, and you’ll probably know more than Mr. President himself by the end of the talk!

Doors 13:30, talk starts at 14:00. Duration c90 mins including a tea & coffee break
