Retired engineer and volunteer for the Inland Waterways Association (IWA) and the Basingstoke Canal Society will give us an illustrated talk on the history of the Basingstoke Canal.
The Basingstoke Canal was completed in 1794, connecting Basingstoke with the River Thames at Weybridge via the Wey Navigation. It was not commercially successful, and was badly neglected after 1950. Restoration commenced in 1977 and on 1991 it was reopened as a leisure facility. Most of the canal has now been designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest.
We may organise a 2.5 hour barge cruise on the canal in the spring/summer if there is sufficient interest.
Doors 13:30, talk starts at 14:00. Duration c90 mins including a tea & coffee break
