SIHG Talk: "Robert Hooke & Thomas Tompion - Father of Clock-making" by Martin Grossel (Zoom)

Date:
Thursday, 23 January, 2025 - 19:15 to 20:45

Robert Hooke and Thomas Tompion were both involved in the development of clocks and watches, and their work helped make English clockmakers leaders in the world.

Thomas Tompion produced over 5,000 clocks and watches, including some of the first watches with balance springs, and  made the original clocks for the Royal Observatory at Greenwich. He died in 1713 and is buried in Westminster Abbey .  Polymath Rober Hooke, a contemporary of Isaac Newton,  is better known – but what’s the link between Hooke and Tompion? Please join us and find out.

Martin Grossel is an Emeritus Fellow in Chemistry at Christ Church, Oxford, and at the University of Southampton. His research interests also include aspects of the History of Science. This is his first talk for SIHG. The talk will start at 19:30, there  will be time for questions afterwards.
